Heroism and Sacrifice for Love

Big hero 6 is an animated movie about a young boy called Hiro Hamada. He was interested in bots-fighting and robots in general, so his brother Tadashi Hamada took him to his university, “the san fransokyo institute of technology" Thereupon, Tadashi wanted Hiro to see his colleague's inventions, and to show Hiro his new project that he was working on which was Baymax, a healthcare robot. Tadashi’s main goal for his project was to help and save people. Hiro got inspired after he met Tadashi’s professor Robert Callaghan who invented the microbots and decided to apply to the university with his new invention, the Neurotransmitter Headband that controls the microbots, in the yearly showcase that the university does. Moreover, Professor Krei got interested in Hiro’s invention and wanted Hiro in Krei Tech. But Hiro was not interested. The same day as the showcase, the university caught on fire. Tadashi went to save professor Callaghan, who was still inside the building, but none of them made it out alive, and they passed away. It was indeed a heroic action; however, it is clearly shown in the movie that true love demands sacrifice.

Hiro is an intelligent fourteen years old boy living with his big brother and aunt Cass who raised them after their parent's death. He graduated high school way before his age because of his intelligence. Hiro spent much of his time on illegal bot fighting and refused to enter the university because he was too intelligent for that. Moreover, he is a carefree and free-spirited fun boy. However; Hiro lost all of his interest in university due to Tadashi’s death, he stopped communicating with people, he did not register for university classes, and he stopped going out grieving his big brother’s death. Who sacrificed himself to protect professor Callaghan when he said: “Callaghan is in there; someone has to help.” (22:48)

Moreover, Hiro said that the microbots could link up together (18:07). And after the incident, Hiro lost his Neurotransmitter Headband and most of his microbots. Until he found one of his microbots was moving in the same jacket he wore to the showcase (28:35). He then realized that someone was using his microbots. He ignored it, but Baymax told him ‘ your tiny robot trying to go somewhere ‘, and Hiro responded without caring, but Baymax thought that it would stabilize Hiro’s mood swing and started following the microbot. Hiro started following Baymax, who was holding the microbot that led them to a strange place in a hidden area. Hiro snuck in and found many microbots in there. An unknown masked guy found out that Hiro and Baymax were inside, and he started attacking them with the microbots (31:12).

After that, Hiro had a moment of realization when he said: “ at the showcase, the guy in the mask stole my microbots and set fire to cover his tracks, (41:03). He is responsible for Tadashi’s death, we gotta catch that guy.”. Later on, Hiro decided that he had got to catch that guy, so he put in most of his effort and spent most of his time programming another version of Baymax and designing a suit for it. After all of the re-programming, Hiro drew a poisonous sign on the new chip for Baymax. Then, Hiro sacrificed himself when he followed the microbot for a second time unshielded and it led him to the same place the last time, but this time it was at night and Hiro went alone just to get revenge for his brother’s death. But Baymax had already contacted Tadashi’s friends to come over, (46:32), because based on how Hiro was feeling Baymax pointed out that: “ those who suffer from a loss require support from friends and loved ones.”, (46:36 ). Hiro noticed a logo on the block that the masked guy was moving. It had a bird silhouette in (45:53). Also, Baymax has scanned the masked guy to assist with his healthcare needs, and Hiro mentioned that he could use the data from Baymax’s scan to find him.

Soon enough, Hiro and his friends decided to catch the masked guy, when Hiro told his friends: “if we need to catch that guy, I need to upgrade all of you.” (53:59). At first, they were not interested in Hiro’s plan until Gogo said: “Tadashi Hamada was our best friend, we are in.”(54:21) which clearly shows that they are willing to sacrifice anything to get revenge for their best friend and to help his little brother Hiro. First, they started analyzing what happened on the day of the showcase and concluded that Krei was behind the fire situation because he wanted Hiro’s invention. So, they spent most of their time upgrading suits for each other, Hiro, Fred, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, Gogo, and upgrading and programming a harming version of Baymax. And Hiro has made himself a suit, that he can hang onto Baymax’s suit and fly together.

Then, Baymax scanned the whole city and found a match to the previous data observed on an island. Later, Hiro, Baymax, and his friends went to the island to get the masked guy. They planned to get his mask to find out who he was and for him to stop using the Neurotransmitter Headband that he hid behind the mask. Before attacking the masked guy, they found damaged machines, so they started searching for evidence and found screens that showed the tests that Krei and his colleagues had done with the teleportation machine, and Krei led the opperting of the machine. Then, the masked guy appeared out of nowhere and started attacking Hiro, and his friends managed to remove his mask. A shocked face was drawn on Hiro’s face when he found out that the man behind the mask was professor Callaghan. Anger took over Hiro, so he commanded Baymax to kill Callaghan, but Baymax refused because Tadashi did not make him for that reason. Hiro removed Baymax’s memory card and inserted the harmful memory card that Hiro made for attacking the masked man (1:09:58). Baymax started attacking Callaghan with a last chance to kill Callaghan. Honey lemon removed Baymax’s second card and inserted the old one. Hiro felt betrayed by his friends, so he got on Baymax’s back and returned home (1:11:42).

Hiro returned to his lab in the garage and attempted to remove Baymax’s memory card, but Baymax refused and told Hiro: “ Is this what Tadashi wanted?.” . Hiro screamed “Tadashi’s gone”, and Baymax answered: “Tadashi’s here” and started showing him clips of Tadashi’ experimenting with Baymax. After that, Hiro realized that killing Callaghan would never honour Tadashi’s death, so he started apologizing to Baymax. His friends arrived he started asking them for forgiveness, but they had already forgiven him. Gogo told him: “this time, we are going to catch Callaghan, and this time we’ll do it right”. Later on, they found more evidence of the damaged machines and started playing the videos, and they found out that who tested the portal was Callaghan’s daughter Abigail, but she did not make it, and the portal exploded. So they started connecting the dots and realized that what was happening was a revenge story.(1:12:29- 1:16:23)

The next day Krei had a showcase for the new campus of Krei Tech, and the masked villain Callaghan came to get revenge for his daughter. Trying to get revenge, Callaghan said to Krei:” you took everything from me when you sent Abigail into that machine; now I’m taking everything from you.”,(1:17:33), and he started destroying the building with a machine he made and the microbots. Soon enough, Hiro and his friends arrived. Hiro commanded Callaghan to let Krei go and asked him: “Is this what Abigail would have wanted?.”. Callaghan replied: “Abigail is gone!.”. Hiro tried to change his mind by telling him: “this won’t change anything; trust me, I know.”. But Callaghan was too selfish and wanted his daughter back. So, he started attacking and fighting everyone until Hiro came up with a second plan to destroy the bots, and the microbots will  get sucked by the portal .(1:16:30-1:22:00)

While Callaghan tried to get his revenge and destroy everything, most of the microbots were already sucked by the portal. Baymax was about to punch him, but it stopped and Hiro told him that this was not what Tadashi’s programme was about and that it prevented them from injuring a human being. After all this fighting, they caught Callaghan but could not close the portal, and Krei told them: “the portal is gonna tear itself apart.”. So, Hiro said that they had to get out of there now, but Baymax did not move from the portal because his sensor detected life coming from the portal; he also mentioned that the life signs were female. Moreover, she appeared to be in hypersleep. Hiro and Baymax went into the portal, and before that, Krei warned them that the portal was destabilizing; they might not make it. Then, Hiro told him: “Someone has to help.” Hiro sacrificed himself and Baymax to save Abigail.(1:22:55-1:24:37)

Hiro and Baymax went into the portal and managed to find the ship that Abigail was in, and Hiro guided Baymax to make it out of the portal. Before they make it out, a rock was about to hit Hiro and the ship but Baymax came in front of it and hit him instead, so Baymax's suit broke, and he cannot use it again. Hiro grabbed Baymax closer to him and the ship, and Baymax told him that there was still a way to get Hiro and Abigail to safety, so Baymax inserted his hand into the ship so he could send them both outside the portal. However, Hiro did not want to leave Baymax because he did not want to lose another loved one, but there was no other way for Baymax to help, and Baymax was willing to sacrifice anything for Hiro and told him: “I’ll always be with you.”. Hiro made it out of the portal with the ship and was devastated that Baymax did not make it. The ambulance rescued Abigail, and the police caught Callaghan. After saving the day, they returned to their normal lives and became big heroes 6. Hiro returned to Tadashi’s lab in the university with the hand of suit for Baymax, so he opened it and found Baymax’s memory card and managed to bring Baymax back.(1:25:45-1:31:31)

In conclusion, this movie indeed shows what it means to sacrifice for love, and it could come in many different forms, sacrificing for a teacher, a friend, a loved one, a stranger, or your patient like Baymax did with Hiro.
